Dersin Amacı

The course does not aim to offer definitive answers to definitive set of questions. Rather, our goal is to achieve a critical understanding of the problems involved in answering a set of definitive questions. In addition, the course aims to equip students with the ability to read and comprehend philosophical texts and it will train their ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

1 Bu ders temel siyasal düşünceleri ve siyaset felsefesinin temel tartışma alanlarını temel düzeyde sağlama amacı taşımaktadır.
2 Ders çağdaş siyasal düşüncelerin arkaplanını oluşturan düşünürler ve fikirileri hakkında bilgi kazandırmaktadır.
3 Ders hem klasik dönemde hem de çağdaş dönemde siyasal tartışmaların merkezinde yer alan adalet, yönetim, bağımsızlık, vatandaşlık, eşitlik gibi alanlarda yürütülen tartışmaları açıklamaktadır.

Dersin İçeriği

This course is an introduction to the classical texts and themes of political thought. We will be reading selections from the canonical works of Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Rousseau and Mill. These texts have provoked thought across many centuries on a wide range of topics— the question of justice, the organization of communities, the exercise and regulation of power, the rights of citizens, the meaning of liberty. We will also be reaching outside the Western canon to explore the works of original thinkers whose writings have deeply influenced the politics of our times.
