The objectives of this course are to teach students the contemporary issues related to geological engineering



1 1.Adequate knowledge in mathematics, science and engineering subjects pertaining to the relevant discipline; ability to use theoretical and applied knowledgein these areas in complex engineering problems 2.Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems; ability to select and apply proper analysis and modeling methods for this purpose. 3.To gain knowledge of taking precautions against problems within above-ground and below ground soil/rock environments through theoretical and practical instructions as given in the objectives 4.Students shall gain knowledge and skills such as improvement of the safety, reduction of costs in construction sites. 5.Students shall gain knowledge of determining the proper selection of the routes, 6.Students shall gain skill of using geology in civil engineering projects and knowledge of evaluating borehole logs 7.Students shall gain knowledge of constructing geological cross section and knowledge of drawing of geological cross-sections and the routes of tunnels or subways, engineering problems that may be encountered

Earthquake geology. Ground water geology. Decomposition. Geology of the mass movements and landslides. Basic geology. Geology of the tunnel. Geology of the dam. Field research.

1 Description of geology and engineering geology, topics and application areas, its place within Civil Engineering Plate techtonics, earthquakes (mechanism, types, earthquake waves, magnitude, importance of earthquakes in engineering).
2 Materials that consist the earth’s crust (minerals and their properties, classification, areas of usage, importance within engineering) Mineral classes of rock formation.
3 Definition of rocks, igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and their properties, their environment and formation, engineering properties of rocks and the areas of their usage.
4 Laboratory (Minerals, Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic Rocks).
5 Midterm I
6 Strength properties of rocks, structure and texture, techtonical deformations, direction and inclination concepts, fold types, faults, discontinuties and their importance in engineering.
7 Classification of rocks and discontinuties for Civil Engineering, stability of rock slopes. Determination of the properties of discontinuties on the surface and through borings, TCR, SCR, RQD, Evaluation of borings for soil investigations, determination of boring depth and location, boring tests and preparation/evaluation of boring logs.
8 Mass movement (creep, landslide, rock falls, rock topples, failure etc.) Reasons and Preventive Measures. Geology for foundations (the effect of geological factors in selecting the foundation type, engineering geological studies for foundation soils, roads and other routes) The selection of the routes for tunnels/subways, engineering difficulties and measures in the geological environments within a route, presentation and discussion contemporary examples.
9 The study of slides reflecting the geological structures from various areas throughout Turkey: Minerals, rock, stratification, dikes, folds, faults, discontinuties, weathering, landslides and its damages, water resources, dam/tunnel slides, comments and discussion.

11 Engineering geology maps (properties, classification, preparation of topographical cross-section, drawing of geological cross-sections and the routes of tunnels or subways, engineering problems that may be encountered).
12 Geology of dams: Dams and geoloical criteria for dam construction, types and their properties, engineering geological studies in dam construction and the factors impacting the dam type and location, the effects of rocks to dam construction ad the environment.
13 Tunnel geology: Tunnels and the geological criteria for tunnel construction, tunnel types and their properties, geological criteria in selecting a route, factors affecting the costs, excavation methods, the events during tunnel construction, stress distribution,
14 Classification of rocks for tunnel construction, geological problems in tunnels, water in tunnels, gas and heat issues, tunnel boring methods etc. The effect of geological structure on the stress condition.
